We are pleased to welcome Oregon artist Brigitte Dortmund for her second solo show at our gallery. A graduate of Lewis and Clark College and PNCA, and a long-time participant in the Portland art scene, her richly textured paintings are inspired by music and the natural world. Dortmund’s creative process begins with a color idea or gesture. She allows intuition and spontaneity to lead the palette knife where it wants to go, listening to the painting, considering its tone, pitch and lyrical quality. Dortmund works in her studio most days, often developing multiple paintings simultaneously, each taking several weeks time. The results are colorful and compelling, muscular, abstract expressions, which are open to interpretation, and allow the viewer a freedom to see. For Dortmund, Werner Herzog expresses it well: “Perhaps I see utopian things, human honor and respect, landscapes not yet offended, planets that do not yet exist....dreamed landscapes.”
